Exteriors
Nestled on a hill of Nerano, a portion of Massa Lubrense on the Sorrento coast, this historical residence with its 19th century ambience will set you at a heavenly beautiful setting. Part of the way to these apartments in Sorrento is an old mule track that goes up for quite a few metres to lead to the residence housing them. Antiquity and modernity meet at the apartments: a precious Moresque patio surrounded by stone arches and biological agriculture, an old orchard and all the modern comforts in the apartments. The way to Nerano takes visitors to the foot of Mount San Constanzo, the mountain that shelters the village from the sun and guarantees cool evenings to the villagers.
In 17th century the residence was erected in a medieval suburb. At the time, the lemon groves occupied extensive areas and agriculture was another important economic activity. For the high quality of the lemon produce, the best on the Sorrento coast, it was chosen to be exported to the USA and England. The Farisani family made changes to the building’s structure. The result was the beautiful residence we can admire today. The building became their aristocratic rural residence. The property was bought by the Cerulli family from Calabria who kept it for two centuries and then lady Luisa Cerulli left it in her will to the family La Via coming from Quecy, France. From 1904 to 1988 the premises belonged to the Marquis of Villarena Pietro as his seaside resort. The marquis had been born in Naples in 1896, he graduated from the Law school at Federico II University. He volunteered in the Great War and got the Tenant of Artillery degree. He was decorated with medals for valour and promoted to officer under General Enrico Caviglia. His passion for philosophy reaped its fruit: Mente e Realtà (Ed. La Nuova Italia, Firenze, 1947) in which he strongly disagrees with Immanentism by Croce. When he moved into Nerano, he devoted himself to writing poems and erotic verses. The marquis also took care of the produce and way lemons were wrapped to be sent abroad and personally took part in the wrapping process. In 1977 he was rewarded with the honorary citizenship when Mente e Realtà was 30 of publication. A bronze sculpture was located in one of the halls of Palazzo La Via. The statue made by Marisa Ciardiello honoured the marquis in the centenary of his birth in 1996.
During the post-war famous intellectuals gather in the property. Gaetano Salvemini, Renato Caccioppoli, Clotilde Marchieri, Francesco d’Avalos, Giorgio Punzo, Harold Hacton, Roger Pierrefitte and Sandro Penna enjoyed the beautiful inspiring atmosphere of this residence. The present owner received the historically priceless property in 1985 and devoted himself to renew it and give it all its splendour.
